Are you on board for the Tall Ships Races in Sunderland?

Posted on May 29, 2018

As a leading estate agent in Sunderland, we’re proud to be local and nothing makes us more honoured to do business in such a diverse and vibrant city than when a huge event comes to town. The world famous Tall Ships Races is back for another year, and more than 1.5 million visitors are expected to visit Sunderland for this fabulous four-day event. Here we reveal what to expect from this year’s Tall Ships Races as the countdown officially begins…

What?

The Tall Ships Races see more than 80 Tall Ships travel to the city of Sunderland. Taking place each summer, the event transforms the city. It’s not just the two race regatta featuring three legs that’s the draw for the millions of visitors and locals that head out to celebrate, the entire city becomes a family-friendly festival of culture, celebrating Sunderland’s maritime past and the long journey that the Tall Ships are about to embark on.

The event will see the ships open to the public with free access available at select times. Many of the ships will also be the settings of exclusive, ticketed deck events. To find out more about this year’s ticketed and free deck events, please click here.

Where?

The Tall Ships event takes place on the banks of the River Wear and the Port of Sunderland. Previous years have seen the Tall Ships come to nearby Blyth in Northumberland.

As with the Northumberland races back in the summer of 2016, the Sunderland races represent the first leg of the much longer Tall Ships route. All the Tall Ships you’ll see here will be making their way to Esbjerg in Demark, then on to Stavanger in Norway before finishing their voyage in Harlingen in The Netherlands on 6th August 2018.

When?

This year’s Tall Ships Races will take place from Wednesday 11th July to Saturday 14th July. During this time, there will be a plethora of events to enjoy around the city, including a range of deck events on-board. The Crew Parade and the Parade of Sail however are considered highlights. There are also a number of events taking place in the run up to the Tall Ships Races 2018, including 103.4 Sun FM and the Tall Ships team’s Swab the Decks event, a fun pirate themed beach clean-up taking place on Roker Beach on Friday 1st June 2018.
